Traditionally, Coloumbus was regarded as a hero bacause he braved the Atlantic Ocean at a time when most people still thought the Earth was flat and discovered a new world, which is now heaily populated by the Europeans who later followed him. But as the United States has changed and our ability to look at our history more objectively has improved, more and more people are wondering if what Colombus did was really such a good thing after all.
Because Columbus visit eventually led to the destruction of hundreds of indigenous civilizations in the Americas and to enormous death and sufffering, many people have come to regard him as something of a villain.
